Letters from Kerry Harvey (4/30 + 6/3/14)

April 30, 2014

To Kim + Matthew + All the gang :)

Let me start by apologizing for the late reply. Thank you all for the birthday wishes and Mary’s and I books you sent. Kim, great call on the Zora Hurston :) Read it in one day. Sucks we have to donate our books to the jail though :(

So what’ve you guys + gals been up to out there? Just to let you all know Mary Horton’s my cellie and the water here’s still effecting us. We’ve gone down to medical having to have paid for our visit + script only to still break out in itchy scratchy bumps. I’ve literally scratched my flesh apart over a large percent of my body + I’m a big girl mind you lol. Medical says (Nurse Lynn) that it’s not the first cases she’s seen in medical since the water crisis and that it’s mainly in the African American inmates that this is largely being reported. They prescribed us some steroid cream for it, 5 day supply or so and it really relieved nothing for we still itch and unfortunately nothing’s going to remedy this, not in here at least. By any chance do you know of anything else better to use for all this crazy itching? The state isn’t going to supply us with a care if especially the CDC’s saying the waters are safe now. My skin says otherwise still.

I apologize for not being able to do the video for you  all but my head/hair was looking a hot mess that day so opted to pass. Give me notice for when you’re coming if you want to come still and I promise to do that for you. Yeah clearly we’re still having water issues here and [neither] the jail or the states are willing to admit it. Mary + I have bumps, two different types of bumps (itchy bumps) that comes up on us still. We even begged to go be de-liced to see if that would help and medical laughed saying “You don’t have lice.” They know it’s the water. They even warned the preg. woman we have here not to drink the water. She’s only been here 2 ½ weeks – 3.

So yes, if you’d like to return I’d gladly interview for you + show you my badly scarred skin due to the water I believe. Not like we can get professional medical attention in here to diagnose us. If I’d known I’d still be digging my flesh apart when you last came to visit, up to now I surely would’ve done the interview regardless of my hair situation. I’m going to try to get this out in the morning mail so I better wrap this up now. As I write you this letter I’m still itching like crazy + that sucks :(

Again sorry about the slow reply to you + Kim’s letter. I think it’s great what you all are doing. Especially here in Chemical Valley. Sad how money outweighs natural beauty.

I’m so happy to finally be able to write you. Please don’t think I’ve been ignoring you it’s just when I got moved to Lakin it really set things behind a month. I haven’t been able to order commissary here til 3 wks after I got here and even after that it took another week to finally get, so now that I have stamps finally once again I can write you. I’d written you before I left SCRJ but I’d got called out to come here so I didn’t get a chance to finish or mail it obviously.

:) I brought my book “their eyes were on god” with me, I’ve read it 2-3 more times since I’ve been at Lakin… This place is way better than the regional. Gta say though as far as regionals go SC is the least strict. Others are ran like prisons pretty much from what I hear…

I’ll try to get you all on a visitation list if you like if I can remember I’ll send out the form in this letter. I enjoyed reading what your little bro wrote. Interesting kid.

It’s about 9:30p, I still have reading to do and a silly cellmate to deal with. Please if you hear from Mary tell her “WE” the SCRJ crew misses her and we want her here with us soon. This place beats the hard living she’s going thru at the reg. I could write pages upon pages but let’s just let this letter find you first then we can maybe correspond a lil more if you’d like. Lol I promise to write back sooner next time.

When I read this passage in a book of I thought of you:

“When you think someone should do something, remember YOU ARE SOMEONE.”

Real talk I’ve slept with that Zora Hurston book in bed with me every night since I finally started reading it pretty much, matter of factly it’s in bed with me right now as I write you.

“There is nothing to make you like other human beings so much as doing things for them.”
Zora Neale Hurston :)

So yes you really got me digging Zora Hurston so if you all would like to send me more I’d definitely enjoy and treasure the reading. Sucks that on the outs I don’t have time to read either. Now days it seems like a lost art just like a land line telephone.

BTW I have been here since May 2 lol I’m just noticing the date on the letter I’d written you at the reg. Okay, copy those papers about visitation. Each person must fill out a separate form…

Okay I’m wrapping this up now. It’s even later and I still haven’t done my reading for the day. Oh now days I don’t know what’s going on on the outside really. I get no newspaper and we can’t turn up the TV here to watch the news so I just don’t bother to watch it really. So keep me posted please. Again thanks for the correspondence.

P.S. If you can please let Matt know you heard from me please.
